Digital Literacy in the Age of Information & Social Media. A Three-Part Series

Dates: 3.7.23, 3.14.23, and 3.21.23

Time: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Description: Nearly a quarter of the way into the 21st century, adult learners face a seemingly endless barrage of information, mis-information, means to virtually connect and interact with the world of users, and access to an ever-growing array of digital sources that are at once reliable & unreliable. More than ever, there is a need for sophistication around what sources to trust, which to avoid, where to gather the best news and information, and critical thought around the digital noise that surrounds us. In this 3-part series, adult educators will explore the underpinnings of digital literacy, examine sources of news, fake news, and propaganda, review social media outlets, and determine ways of helping adult learners become critical thinkers and users of the technology that shows no sign of slowing down. Through the lenses of history and society, and using case study approaches to broaden understanding, adult educators will develop ways to apply their knowledge of our digital lives to classroom norms, practices, and content, and to ultimately help create a more informed citizenry. Registrants are required to attend all sessions.
